Three main categories: Russell Group (24 research-intensive universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE), pre-1992 “red brick” universities, and post-1992 universities (former polytechnics with strong vocational focus).
Academic Calendar
Semester 1: September–December Semester 2: January–May Intake: Primarily September (some January intakes available).
Degree Duration
England, Wales, Northern Ireland: 3 years (Bachelor’s), 4 years (integrated Master’s) Scotland: 4 years (Bachelor’s with Honours)
UK degrees are shorter than US (4 years) and Australian (3–4 years for arts/science, 4–5 for law/engineering/medicine), meaning lower total living costs despite high annual tuition.
Costs
- Tuition: £15,000–35,000/year (approximately A$30,000–70,000)
- IHS surcharge: £776/year
- Living costs: £12,000–15,000/year (London: £15,000–18,000/year)
Total 3-year degree: approximately £90,000–150,000 (A$180,000–300,000).
Student Route Visa
Requirements: Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), proof of funds, English proficiency, TB test (certain countries). Processing: 3 weeks (priority: 5 working days). Dependants can accompany postgraduate students (course ≥9 months at a recognised institution).
Graduate Route Visa
2 years of post-study work (3 years for PhD) without employer sponsorship. Convertible to Skilled Worker visa if employed in a qualifying role.
Key Considerations
- No deferral for competitive courses: Oxbridge and many Russell Group universities are reluctant to grant deferrals
- Strong tutorial culture: Oxford/Cambridge use one-to-one or one-to-two tutorials — the most intensive undergraduate teaching model globally
- Weather: Prepare for grey, rain, and short winter days — affects mental health for students from sunny climates
